The Promising Writers Contest is dedicated to cultivating and celebrating the exceptional writing talents of students in grades 5-12

The Promising Writers Contest strives to empower the next generation of talented authors, journalists, and storytellers. Through their powerful words, we believe our students can make a lasting impact and inspire positive change in our school and beyond.
Aims and Objectives
Through this annual competition, we aim to
Inspire Creativity and Self-Expression
Provide a platform for students to share their unique perspectives, stories, and ideas through various creative writing genres.
Develop Essential Writing Skills
Foster the growth of critical thinking, effective communication, and polished writing abilities among participants.
Promote Academic Excellence
Encourage students to engage deeply with important social, environmental, and global themes through their written work.
Recognize Outstanding Achievement
Honor the most promising young writers and offer them meaningful opportunities for recognition and reward.
Build a Vibrant Writing Community
Create a supportive environment that nurtures the literary passions of students and inspires them to continue honing their craft.
Writing Categories
The contest features three main writing categories in English and Arabic
Short Story
Poetry
Essay & Article
These categories allow students to showcase their abilities across different creative and analytical writing genres.
Age Divisions
The contest is divided into three age-based divisions to ensure fair and equal evaluation
Category 1
Grades 5-6 (5 finalists from each school)
Category 2
Grades 7-9 (5 finalists from each school)
Category 3
Grades 10-12 (5 finalists from each school)
This structure enables the judges to assess entries from students at similar developmental and skill levels.
Writing Prompts
To inspire creativity and address important themes, the contest provides distinct writing prompts for each age division
Category 1 (Grade 5-6)
- Write a narrative essay about a time when you were proud of yourself. Describe what happened.
- Image one morning there's a knock at your front door. You open the door, and to your great surprise, you find an alien standing there. What do you do? What does it look like? Write a narrative about this imaginary experience.
- Imagine you could travel to the future and live there. How different would it be from today? Write a story about living in the future.
- Write a story about a friendly robot who has an unusual set of skills.
- How can I ensure that all children in my country have access to a high-quality education, regardless of their background or abilities? Write an informative essay to share your ideas about the matter.
- What are you most worried about when it comes to the future of the environment? Write an informative essay to share your ideas about the matter.
Category 2&3 (Grade 7-9 and 10-12)
Write a short story (Max. 1000 words), an essay (Max. 500 words) or a poem about one of the following topics.
- Environment
- Good Health and Well-being
- Quality Education
- Zero Hunger
- Peace and Justice
- Diversity and Understanding
Students can choose one of these themes to base their entry on.
Contest Rules
Submission Guidelines
To ensure fairness and quality, the contest has the following submission requirements:
-One entry per participant
-All submissions must be original work
-Short stories have a maximum word count of 1000 words, essays a max of 500 words
-Plagiarism and excessive violence/language will result in disqualification
Key Dates
Deadline to apply: December 10, 2024
Competition date: December 14, 2024
Judging Criteria
Entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
-Relevance and connection to the given theme
-Creativity, originality, and imagination
-Effective writing style, organization, and flow
-Proper grammar, spelling, and mechanics
Final Day Presentation Criteria:
1- Organization: 15
2- Explanatory Skills: 15
3- Fluency: 10
4- Rapport with audience members: 10
Your final score will be the sum of 50% of your writing assignment score and 50% of your presentation score.
Awards
To celebrate the top writers, the contest offers the following prizes and recognition
1st place: 600 LE, medal, and certificate
2nd place: 500 LE, medal, and certificate
3rd place: 400 LE, medal, and certificate
All participants/finalists: Certificate of participation
The grand finale event on December 14, 2024, will provide an opportunity for winners to present their work and be publicly recognized.
